Synopsis - Long Form

Joshua finds himself with no direction in his life as he closes in on his forties. His father passed away a year earlier, leaving him to care for his slightly "touched" mother. Now his girlfriend is leaving him, and Josh really begins to panic when he loses his job.

In a moment of desperation, Josh takes a loan from a neighborhood thug. As he walks down the city street, Josh is pick-pocketed. All the money is gone. Since he has no way to pay back the debt, Josh is asked to do a "favor" for the loan shark. He's told it's a simple driving job, but Josh is afraid it will turn out to be something more serious.

After reluctantly agreeing to do the job, Josh begins see a strange figure following him. At first he only catches glimpses of the shadowy figure, and he can't quite make out who or what it is. But as the day of the job grows closer, the shadowy figure fully reveals himself. He is a dead man, a waterlogged, half rotted away corpse. Josh's first reaction is that he is losing his mind. "Why am I being followed around by a rotted soup man that only I can see?" He asks himself.

He discovers the answer while visiting his aunt. She tells him a dark family secret about his mother Margaret, a story from when Josh was only a few weeks old. It turns out the man Josh thought was his father was not his father at all, but a kind man who married Margaret years after Josh's birth. Josh's real father had skipped town upon learning of Margaret's pregnancy. Suffering from postpartum depression and reeling from her lover's abandonment, Margaret attempted to end it all.

In a fit of depression, Margaret took her infant son with her on a suicidal plunge, driving her car directly into an icy lake. As they slowly sank, a passerby saw what was happening and ran to the rescue. The man barely managed to get mother and son out, but in doing so, his clothing became caught on the car's fender. The car sank to the bottom, taking the good Samaritan with it. Margaret carried her son back to shore and never spoke about what happened, for fear her son would be taken from her. She simply reported the car stolen and went on with her life. Josh's aunt is the only one that knows what really happened that day.

After hearing this, Josh realizes that his ghost is none other than the man who saved his life as a baby. It's clear that the dead man does not want Josh to throw his life away, thereby making the man's sacrifice a waste. Understanding this, Josh sets out to remedy the situation. He'll stand up to the mob, no matter the consequences. But is he truly ready to face the wrath of the double-crossed loan shark?
